1955 Corvette: This is the story we were told & as we know it…
Somewhere in the late 50’s, this 1955 Corvette left California and was driven to an Air Force Base in Massachusetts, where the owner of the ‘55 was stationed… He was being shipped out overseas so before he left, he sold the Corvette to a local person… The new owner drove the car for about a year but decided he didn’t like the color of the car. He dismantled the car and there it sat, dismantled and in 100 boxes until 1996…
Rob was looking for a yellow ‘55 V 8 because his wife Rene had asked for a ‘55 Vette with that ORIGINAL color combination for her 50th birthday. She asked him well in advance of her 50th because she knew that there were only about 39 Corvettes made with that color combination and not all of them were V 8’s… Rob went to the Carlisle, Pa. Corvette show where he met someone who owned the ‘55, which as mentioned, was dismantled and in 100 boxes. When Rob purchased the ‘55, it had 19,000 plus miles on it… Rob bought the car when his wife was still 47, thinking he would finish the restoration by the time his wife had her 50th birthday. But he was lucky because almost ALL the original parts were there. The restoration took about 9 months, doing all the work after hours… Wherever we went with this car, N.C.R.S. or local shows, we would almost always win “Best In Show”… At N.C.R.S. we scored 91-93 points out of 100 for originality… Here’s the progression of some of the awards the ‘55 won… Dates are approximately…
>1998 Top Flight at N.C.R.S. …
>1998 Bloomington Gold …
>1999 Mid America Fun Festival, Judges Choice …
>2001 Chicago McCormack Center, Chevy Vette Fest, Gold Spinner/Best Corvette,
where we were prominently displayed and won our Triple Crown Award …
>2001 A photographer took a photo of our ‘55 while on display at Carlisle, Johnny Lightening make a copy of our vehicle and made a diecast model of it, license plate and all… Which was then used on the Cover of Vette magazine … 2 additions…
>2003 We were contacted by General Motors and asked if we would be willing to display our car in the window of Lord & Taylor on 5th Avenue N/Y. for a month, celebrating the 50ith anniversary of the Corvette … Which we were proud to do …
> We also did many fund raising events with this car, Children’s hospital, Make a Wish, etc …
>2023 We sold our ‘55, it was a sad day for us but we know she has a good home …
